Meaning and Purpose.
The 6th area of our well-being course concerns reflecting upon the meaning and the purpose of our lives. Quite clearly, if one has a sense that their life has worth and contributes to something greater than themselves, they will have an enhanced sense of well-being and the lessons in this area of the course are designed to give students some space to reflect on where their lives are headed and what their own life path might mean.
This aspect of the course is heavily inspired by the work of 2 people: Viktor Frankl and George Vaillant. Viktor Frankl wrote an extraordinary book entitled 'Man's Search for Meaning', made all the more extraordinary by the fact that he wrote it in just 9 days upon emerging from a concentration camp. There is a link to some notes on him below.
George Vaillant is famous for his work studying the ingredients of flourishing lives. he became involved in long-term studies which followed people throughout their lifetimes and wrote a book entitled 'Aging Well', which summarises the findings of these studies and shows how people have made the best of the different stages of adult life that we go through.
