Sustainability Mission Statement and Policies

We are in the process of formulating our sustainability mission statement and policies.   What is here at present has not yet been confirmed by College, but gives you an idea of where we are heading.

Mission Statement

We aim to be as environmentally sensitive school as we reasonably can be, in terms of both our understanding of environmental issues and our acting on such understanding. 

We aim to turn our understanding into intentions, our intentions into actions, and our actions into achievements in order to promote sustainable living in our personal lives, in our school community, our local community and, as far as we can, in the global community.

We aim to encourage the whole College community - pupils, teaching staff, support staff, parents and governors - to be involved in creating a cultural shift from a Convenience Culture to a Sustainability Culture.

We aim to have an organizational structure to enable this, based on the Government's '8 Doorways'  ( http://www.teachernet.gov.uk/sustainableschools/about/about.cfm?levelselected=2&id=2 )

Purchasing
All purchasing should take into consideration sustainability issues, and, in particular, should be sourced from suppliers whose environmental policies have been provided to us.   Although cheapest is not always greenest, we should seek as far as possible to source a greener option, and be able to prove that we have done so.

Travel
Travel undertaken on behalf of College, or College trips including away matches, should be done by the most sustainable form of transport, and/or offset by an appropriate contribution to Climate Care or other offset company approved by The Bursar.

Energy
We aim to buy energy as cheaply as possible from a supplier with an excellent environmental policy.  We practise good housekeeping in the turning off of lights, electronic devices and standby, and we keep room temperatures at 'level 3' rather than anything higher.  We install longlife or LED lighting wherever practicable.   We offset our carbon annually by an appropriate contribution to Climate Care or other offset company approved by The Bursar.
