Allotments at Wellington have a history. These photographs are of pupils at Wellington during the war, "digging for victory". During World War II the pupils were involved in all forms of work to aid the war effort. The Greenhouses were being used to their maximum capacity. Pupils were experimenting with different methods of composting and cultivation to encourage a quick return on fruit and vegetables. This photograph shows cabbages being weighed. The total weight of cabbages produced increased from 1.5 tonnes in 1940 to 3 tonnes in 1941. A lot of cabbage to eat. Presumably in a school of 650, that is about 10.5 pounds of cabvbage a boy in the year!
