Top scorer for Wellington and winner of The Parkinson Trophy was Jamie Allum (T)

Sawyer Cup and Berkshire Open Target Rifle Championships

Wellington shooters were in action again this weekend but with a mix of Cadet Rifle shooting and pure Target Rifle shooting.

The junior element competed in the Sawyer Cup run by the Council for Cadet Rifle Shooting (CCRS) but with only 7 shooters when a team of 8 were required they were up against it. Despite this they shot extremely well and a mediocre 8th man would have got them second to the Epsom first VIII showing the strength of new blood that Wellington has.

A different story in the U16 pairs events where Daniel Leitch (R) and Mason Rainier-Kirkwood (S) dominated the opposition taking first place by 3 clear points. The other junior pair of Henry Martin (Bl) and Alex Innes-Whitehouse (Bl) took bronze position. Hugo Sutton shooting in the Reserve match narrowly missed out and came4th.

Sunday was the Berkshire Open Target Rifle Championships and time for the senior element to perform. The course of fire was 10 to count at 300, 600, 900 and 1000 yards in very tricky wind conditions. Harry Orpen-Smellie (Bl) showed why he had been selected for the Athelings this year and won 2 trophies at short range, he would have won more but Mr Ball denied him by winning the Open short range championship. The novices of Francesca King (A), Oskar Graziosi (M) and Leo Sutton (R) won the Tyro team prize. At long range fortunes were mixed but Nick Bass (M) in his first 1000 yard uncoached shoot came 2nd and helped his team win the long range tyro prize. Mr Ball meanwhile won the open championship.

All in all a good day, lots of individual medals and 7 more trophies for the cabinet.

Surrey Schools Rifle Meeting
Saturday 7th May

The Wellington VIII under the leadership of Harry Orpen-Smellie (Bl) took control of the Surrey Schools Open Rifle meeting in fine style winning the Open and Closed Championships with an excellent score of 505. Top contenders such as Epsom, Oratory and Greshams and a host of others were left trailing by a magnificent team performance at 300 and 600 yards.

Most of the individual events also came to Wellington with Francesca King (A) gaining top individual score overall winning The Officers Cup, she was also 2nd highest score at 600 yards.

Alex Innes-Whitehouse (Bl) won The Hawkins Goblet for top U16 overall and also The Drayson Tankard for top score at 600 yards. Notable performances by Henry Martin (Bl) and Daniel Leitch (R) in the pairs event gave them 2nd place with Hugo Sutton (R) and Olly Rolfe (S) narrowly missing out on winning The Officers Bowl.

London & Middlesex Schools Meeting
Saturday 30th April

The first test of the fullbore competition season and Wellington performed well.

In the team of VIII competition, which is the main thrust of cadet shooting, Wellington gained silver medals, 15 points behind a very strong on form Oratory VIII

The fours were a different story. All shooters have to be under 16 and Wellington A won gold with Wellington B taking silver. The new intake in their first competition shot extremely well and if the two fours teams were almagamated they would have only been 10 points behind the much more experienced VIII. Great potential for the future.

Wellington v Crookham
Saturday 12th February

The last match of the smallbore season and the second season of the unbeaten record to uphold. College were taking on a local side rather than another school and not only that the visiting club were also based at The Wellington range so home advantage would not count.

The visitors had a team of 6 so Harry Orpen-Smellie, The Captain, elected to shoot 2 teams against them and "blood" some of the newer club members.

Wellington opened strongly with Jacopo Lennie (M) putting in a fine 97, Crookham countered with a 98. The strong middle order of Wellington shooters soon enacted revenge wearing the opposition down until Harry put in the shoot of the match season, a perfect 100, the record was intact.

The B team struggled in places, match pressure?, but came a credible 13 points behind Crookham carrying a few below par performances.

Wellington v Marlborough v Dauntseys
Thursday 10th February

The penultimate match of the smallbore season before the shooters move into fullbore shooting.

The team knew this was going to be a tough match and Harry Orpen-Smellie, the Captain, picked his best 10 to travel. All was well until departure time when Nick Bass(M) turned up sick and got sent back to bed, not to worry there were still 9 from which to select the VIII. A no show from Oskar Graziosi (M) caused concern but luckily one of the newer club members, Henry Martin (Bl), turned up early and despite his inexperience was asked to travel.

A good run down to Marlborough in the pouring rain and ready to start at 14.15 just as Dauntseys arrived. The first detail lined out with two from each school, Alex O'Donnell (Hg) and Oli Lyon (M) were starting for Wellington. Random shots throughout the first shoot caused concern until it was established the batch of ammunition in use was suspect; the scores were annulled and those shooters would shoot again at the end.

At the halfway stage Marlborough had recorded some excellent scores but Wellington were steady with no disasters. With only the last few to go it was all square but Alex O'Donnell (Hg) on his re-shoot and Leo Sutton (R) putting in a fine finish gave the result to Wellington, the unbeaten record of two seasons was still intact, one match to go.

Henry Martin (Bl) shooting outside his home range for the first time and roped in at the last minute struggled valiantly against the Marlborough reserve but had to concede in the end, a good learning experience for him though.

Wellington College v Westminster School
Thursday 3rd February

The home match

Westminster School travelled to Wellington for the return fixture this term.

Wellington had practiced hard for this match as it was on home turf, it paid off.

With one of the highest team scores for many a year Wellington took no prisoners and recorded a resounding win with a team average of 96. The visitors learnt many lessons but had to concede they had been soundly beaten by an on form team on their home range.

Particular note should be made of Harry Lei (T) shooting in his first match for Wellington and recording a superb score of 97. He was only beaten to top score by one point from two of the more experienced shooters, Leo Sutton (R) and Jacopo Lennie (M).

The reserve match was won by Mason Rainier-Kirkwood (S) in what was his first appearance for Wellington as well.

Wellington College v RGS Guildford
Saturday 22nd January

The rifle team travelled to RGS Guildford for a return match on Saturday 22nd January. The RGS range is unfamiliar territory for Wellington who have not been there for several years and the peculiarities of the steeply angled firing point and dim lighting would be a challenge for the newer members of the team.

Oli Lyon (M) and Alex O'Donnell (Hg) took up the gauntlet of first men down but it soon became apparent Oli had a problem as his rifle would not accept the ammunition. He was replaced by Jamie Allum (T) pending further investigation. A broken firing pin was the cause of the trouble but this had also damaged the breech rendering the rifle unusable and putting Oli out of the match. Not a good start.

The remainder of the team, knowing there was no room for error, took up the challenge and despite the strange conditions produced a credible performance against a team who were desperate to beat us. It all came down to the last 2 men, Leo Sutton for Wellington and Max Traynor for Guildford, very little in it and all to play for. Leo triumphed and Wellington secured the victory by 3 points, the closest match yet but another win extending the unbeaten run yet further.

Wellington College vs Old Wellingtonians
Saturday 15th January

Wellington College welcomed back some of the Old Wellingtonian shooters for the annual smallbore match on Saturday 15th January.

The old boys were sadly out of shape shooting wise and the current crop of College shooters who train 3 times a week had an easy victory.

Shooting was on the slightly easier Cadet target to even out the gap between current and old boy but College teams relegated the OWs to 5th place.

Despite the easier target perfect scores were recorded by Francesca King (A), Oli Lyon (M) and Alex O'Donnell (Hg) for College and Simon Brown and Ed Welford for the OWs.

Further competition was enacted on an offset animal target where the College A team recorded another win with Andrew Brooker (Hl) gaining top score with a 96.

Ibis Bearwood / Crookham Match - 11/12/10

For the last match of the winter term Wellington College Rifle Club challenged two local non school teams, Ibis Bearwood and Crookham. Unfortunately the Crookham match had to be postponed until next term but Ibis duly rolled out their foursome.

To blood some of the newer members of the College club and give them experience it was decided to enter 3 teams against Ibis with the junior team shooting once and doubling the score. The seniors shot two cards each giving a score out of 800 so it could be compared with the standard eight man team they normally shoot.

Having been Team of the Week for their success in the British Schools Winter Open Championships The Master elected to pay a visit and congratulate those he had not yet seen. His presence behind the firing point and the fact he was watching through a spotting scope inspired the team to raise their game and record the highest score of the term by far. Needless to say the A team won hansomely with the B team tying for second and the C team of youngsters gaining several personal bests.

Wellington College v Westminster School

Another match, another victory. The College team took 2 hours through London traffic to get to Westminster and were in no mood to take prisoners by the time they arrived.

A solid strong team performance swept Westminster aside and a 53 point win was recorded. Top score was new boy Jacopo Lennie (M) with a 98, a remarkable score considering he has only taken up shooting seriously in the last 2 months.

Wellington College Rifle Club v Marlborough College (18/11/10)

In the first shoulder to shoulder match (competitors from different clubs shoot side by side on the firing point) of the winter season Wellington continued their unbeaten record from last season with a win.

The Club Captain, Harry Orpen-Smellie (Bl), elected to use several new shooters as some of the established shots were committed to rugby. The gamble paid of although a gun malfunction cost one of our top shooters 5 points taking the match to the wire and throwing the onus onto the last few shooters. Under pressure, Andrew Brooker (Hl) recorded a fine 99 out of 100 to clock up a win for Wellington and also take the top score prize. It must be said Marlborough have improved tremendously from last season and are now a force to be reckoned with.

English Schools Long Range smallbore match (06/11/10)

Held at Bisley on Saturday 6th November hosted, once again, by Wellington College Rifle Club.A total of 15 teams from 7 schools entered resulting in 63 pupils competing.

The individual was won by R Johnson of Gresham's with an outstanding score of 198 out of 200. Second was Andrew Brooker (Hl)of Wellington College closely followed by Leo Sutton (R) who tied for 3rd with George Anderson of Gresham's.In the team match, won by Gresham's for the last 2 years, their stranglehold was broken by a fine team performance from the Wellington College A team ably led by the club captain Harry Orpen-Smellie (Bl).

Oskar only started fullbore shooting in April and he and the other newecomers have progressed rapidly, they will all be representing Wellington College in the National Schools meeting at Bisley from 11 July to 15 July inclusive.
