Science Department
During the last summer holidays, a number of Wellington pupils have undertaken the sustainable design challenge.
The aim of this challenge was to enhance our awareness of environmental problems (both the present and the near future) such as pollution, global warming and our dependence on fossil fuels. Therefore the challenge was to come up with ideas to offer a solution to these problems and design models to illustrate how such ideas could be implemented in real life in order to sustain a green environment.
Highly commended were
Nick Cho and Zain Abdi came up with the idea of using the daylight to illuminate a room instead of using electricity and, in doing so, lower the electricity demand and contribute to saving energy. Nick and Zain have made a pipeline with mirrors inside that could reflect sunlight through to the inside of a building.
However joint winners were:
Oli Barker who came up with an original idea to prevent electricity wastage with the use of a solar panel.
Oli made a model of two electricity bulbs where one was a normal working bulb and a solar panel underneath and the light from this bulb powered the other thus cutting the use of electricity by half.
James Fotherby came up with the idea of producing electricity from cycling machines in gymnasiums. This he hoped would generate a considerable amount of electricity and provide power for a large number of households.
James prototype is on display in the Kent building as are the other entries to this competition. Please do take opportunities to come and see these projects.
