King James Bible 400 campaign
2011 marked the 400th anniversary
of the King James Bible. As a royally sanctioned and ‘Authorised’ translation
of the Bible, the King James Version (KJV) became the single most influential
work ever published in the English language. Countless Britons learned to read
and write specifically so that they
could read the newly authorised translation. The KJV also introduced hundreds
of new words and phrases into the English language.
So, what did all of this have to do with
Wellington? Last year we decided to participate in the wider celebrations with
a major fundraising event. In the second
and third weeks of the Lent term, we read the entire King James Bible out loud in the chapel: 66 books, 1,189
chapters, 31,102 verses. We succeed in raising over £2500 for Christian Aid (http://www.christianaid.org.uk/), with the support of members of the
local community, parents, and (of course) the students and staff of Wellington.
As part of the event, we also produced a
bespoke hardback Wellington College King James Bible, with a gold stamped
crest. This is available to all those who worked hard to raise money for
Christian Aid, transforming the lives of people in poverty. There are still
copies available – if you would like one, please email Dr. Williams
(gjw@wellingtoncollege.org.uk).
