Philosophy and Religion
|
Studying Philosophy and Religion means being able to encounter two of the most exciting areas open to human beings. It enables us to ask about the most important parts of being human and pose questions like 'What is the meaning of life?', 'Does God exist?', 'Is there life after death?' and 'Am I real?'. Both disciplines teach a rigorous approach to seeking out the answers. The Department hopes to sow the seeds of critical inquiry through our teaching and encourage students to let no stone go unturned and no assumption go unchallenged in their quest for the right answers. During their time at Wellington, all students receive lessons in Philosophy and Religion up until the end of the 5th Form (Year 11). During those three years while all the time developing their thinking and arguing skills, they will grapple with issues such as the problem of evil and the questions it raises about the nature of God, whether war is ever morally right and they will learn about some of the great religious and philosophical minds. Many students choose to study Religious Studies for GCSE and AS/A2 Level, in which they encounter the Philosophy of Religion and Ethics. These courses are very popular and enable students to challenge themselves and each other over the deepest questions of life. We further offer International Baccalaureate courses at Diploma level (Philosophy Standard and Higher levels) and MYP level (Philosophy and Religion for 3rd Form and Philosophy for 4th and 5th form under the Humantites option). The department has an outstanding track record for academic results, hosts a lively Philosophy and Theology Society ('Phil-Thy'), and also supports a number of students who apply to read Theology/Philosophy at top universities each year.
