Tuesday 26th January V Charterhouse
3rd VII (EAW)
This was the first match for the 3rd VII and there was a great deal of competition to get into the initial squad. With 10 players we had the advantage of enabling everyone to have a rest and were also able to try out a number of team combinations. Having established an 11-0 lead in the first quarter it was clear that this team really is as good as we thought. There was some excellent defensive play and we were helped by the fact that our defenders were clearly that little bit taller than the Charterhouse girls. Occasionally we played too fast and lost possession through careless passes, but the overall score of 48-5 is a credit to the girls, who kept their focus to the very end. Player of the match went to Kitty Grubb whose accurate shooting was impressive.
Saturday 23rd January V Lord Wandsworth
U14A's (SF)
Squad: Elodie Jobson, Joanna Koutalides, Ella Henderson, Anna White, Annie-Rose Fiddian-Green, Helena Brennan, Sasha Ansell, Sabrina Capes, Bella Hutley
This was the first full game for the newly-formed Under 14A squad. They got off to a strong start in the first quarter with some great attacking play from Bella (WA) and Helena (C) to feed the ball into Joanna (GA) and Elodie (GS) and by quarter time they led by 15 goals to 2. The second quarter was very similar and excellent defence from Anna (WD), Sabrina (GD) and Sasha (GK) once again restricted Lord Wandsworth's shooting opportunities and the interceptions that they made gave Wellington the chance to further extend their lead so by half time they led by 26 goals to 4. In the third quarter Elodie (GS) and Ella (GA) combined in the shooting circle and the new combination continued to increase Wellington's dominance of the game helped by Annie-Rose who fed some great balls into the circle. Despite being well ahead the players kept their focus right to the end of the final quarter which resulted in a 39-7 win.
Lord Wandsworth voted Joanna Koutalides as their Girl of the Game. Very well deserved as her shooting and movement were outstanding.
Coach's girl of the game was Anna White as she showed her versatility, not only playing in centre court but also being very effective as GK in the last quarter.
U16C's (RCGJ, CB)
The team: Sophie Potter-Mordant (captain), Izzy Hamilton-Fairley, Saskia Glaisher, Milly Hall, Lily Pickard, Susannah De Boinville, Lissy Tate, Hannah Wilson (sub).
The U16 C team started the season on Saturday with a very convincing 28-14 win over Cranleigh, with Sophie Potter-Mordant scoring within 20 seconds of the first speedy centre pass from Saskia. The best scoring of the 10 minute quarters was the first, in which Sophie and Izzy Hamilton-Fairly managed 9 between them. I hope that this acts as a benchmark for them to build even further on this season. Another player worth mentioning was our superb goalkeeper Susannah De Boinville, whose extra long and stretchy arms kept Cranleigh at bay! In all an impressive start to what promises to be an exciting season.
2nds JXG
The 2nds enjoyed a convincing win against Lord Wandsworth in their opening match of the season. Places in the squad are fiercely contested and all girls worked extremely hard in the training sessions and match to secure theirs.
The game started well and our shooters were particularly accurate. In the second quarter we started to overcrowd the ball and failed to capitalise on the great start. At one point Lord Wandsworth even took the lead. However all credit to the team for “keeping their heads” and making sure they got the basics right. We kept possession particularly well and overturned a number of centre passes.
The final score 18-12 was well deserved as was the Player of the Match award to Louise Verroken-Jones who managed to create space and many options for the shooters in her attacking play.
Saturday 16th January V Pangbourne.
U14's
Squad: Isabella Hutley, Annie-Rose Fiddian-Green, Joanna Koutalides, Anna White, Helena Brennan, Ella Henderson, Sabrina Capes, India Cockroft,
Charlotte Jobson, Elodie Jobson, Sasha Ansell, Francesca Dale
We took a large squad of 12 players to our first fixture of the season against Pangbourne and used rolling substitutions to give every a chance to play. In the first 20 minutes we played against Pangbourne Under 14s. There were some good sequences of play by both teams but Wellington had more possession, winning the ball with some good defensive play, but we were unable to convert many of our turnovers because we rushed our passes into the shooting circle. Defensively Sasha Ansell and Sabrina Capes worked extremely hard to frustrate the Pangbourne shooters and picked up some good interceptions and rebounds. Wellington were fast on the break but need to work on controlling the speed so that we make the most of our opportunities. A very encouraging performance.
Final score: Wellington won 5-3
In the second period of 20 minutes we played Pangbourne's Under 15s. Players were asked to focus on coming forward to receive the ball, using shoulder passes and taking time in our attacking third to ensure the ball was delivered safely into the shooters. The second period of play saw a more controlled performance. All the shooters moved well and worked hard to come in front of their defenders and the centre court combined well to bring the ball out of defence. Helena Brennan, Bella Hutley and Annie-Rose Fiddian-Green fed some good balls into the circle. Once again excellent circle defence denied Pangbourne many shooting opportunities and forced them into making errors when feeding the shooters.
Final score: Wellington won 9-6
Girl of the game: Sasha Ansell

Saturday 6th February V Cranleigh
1st VII
Squad - Milly Macmanus (C) Luisa Rubio, Sophie Veerlan, Clemmy Nicholson, Emily James, Claudia Stevenson, Bianca DeVilliers, Ellie Taylor, Amy Howells, Molly Gray
Girl of the Game - Ellie Taylor
Cranleigh were always going to be one of the toughest oppositions for the 1st VII and Saturday saw this yet again. All of the girls in the College 1st VII have been playing well and the team have great depth and character to it. With so many versatile players, the team are incredibly strong.
The first quarter saw the score go one for one until the last final minutes when Wellington lost out 6-3 to Cranleigh. The girls attacked hard straight from the word go, Clemmy Nicholson attacking every ball and drive into space and some great shooting by Luisa and Milly saw no goal oppourtunity missed. The second quarter saw Cranleigh get into their stride with Wellington struggling to keep up, half time score of 15-6 didnt represent how hard the 1st VII were defending. The score of the third quarter of 6-5 to Cranleigh (overall score of 21-11) showed Wellington's commitment not to give up. Ellie Taylor working tirelessly to pick up interceptions and Amy Howells in at Wing Defence saw a fresh pair of legs chasing every ball down. The final score of 29-17 didn't reflect the game that was close throughout and saw the 1st VII working hard and motivating each other on the court. Well done girls on a great start to this season.
2nd VII
Team: Lizzie (Capt), Molly, Lo, Sophie, Bella, G, Maddie, Alex, Audrey, Hannah
The girls were very focused for the match and had trained hard this week. We were met by a very drilled Cranleigh team, who took a slight lead in the opening quarter. In the second quarter the girls settled down and remembered to dodge to receive the ball rather than running away! Unfortunately a poor third quarter saw Cranleigh capitalise on their lead, as we failed to stop the ball getting in to their shooters. In the fourth quarter the team had a further shuffle and held Cranleigh almost to a draw. This was a match in which the team were required to make every 50/50 ball theirs, and to work very hard to keep possession in the centre third. Some lessons learnt, but also a real willingness to want to improve.
Ultimately I am going to award “Player of the Game” to Hannah, who worked tirelessly at GK against an exceptionally tall GS. Well done Hannah!
U16A
Under 16 A Wellington vs. Cranleigh
This was probably our most physical game so far and there was a lot of added pressure from the natural rivalry of the schools. It was a very close match throughout and we improved throughout the game. There was a lot of contact from both sides and we had a lot of fun laughing about the aggressiveness of the game and some of the controversial decisions from the umpire over match tea. Despite not having a full team and one of our shooters feeling unwell, we managed to end with a final score of 25-21 with a Wellington victory.
U15B
Player of the Match: Hannah Scott
The Bs found themselves up against a very good and slick Cranleigh side, with a 6ft GA! The first quarter was reasonably close, with some good passages of play, although the shooters struggled to get into the circle and shoot. In the 2nd quarter a target was set to come forward for the ball more, but Cranleigh extended their lead. The team battled hard throughout the 3rd quarter; Lara Ansell and Freya Cudmore tried hard to double mark the GA and Abby Walters thought very clearly about opening up the court space at C. The final quarter was definitely the best, with the team only losing by 1 goal. Hannah Scott was excellent at WD, demonstrating her versatility and Aimee Huntingdon also played well, feeding some excellent balls into the circle.
U15C
Saturday's match was, in many ways, very pleasing. The first quarter was a bit of a disaster, but the girls listened carefully to the advice given and started playing much more effectively in the next 3 quarters. Martha Grey was the player of the match because she was so effective with blocking the GA out of the circle as GD. Excellent work!
Final score - lost 24-12.
Thursday 11th February V Marlborough
Under 16 A Wellington vs. Marlborough
The conditions were awful for netball with it being freezing cold and very windy so we had to think carefully about our passing and tactics. Marlborough showed a good side that continually moved players around the court, switching positions like us. We adapted to this well and generally played a really good game. It was relatively close throughout but we always managed to maintain a lead. The final score was 23-32 with another Wellington win!
Saturday 27th February V Hurstpierpoint
U16a
The match against Hurstpierpoint was always going to be challenging because they are the only team that had ever beaten us in a fixture. With only 7 players, we were already at a slight disadvantage and nerves were very high. Despite being 5 goals down in the 3rd quarter we managed to keep focus and end with a score of 37-34 for a Wellington win.
We really didn't know what to expect from Portsmouth Grammar school as we had never played them before. It turned out that they were a decent team that had obviously played with each other a lot so it was challenging to gain a lead against them. It was an extremely close match and could have gone either way at some points in the game. We dug deep and played our natural game which took us to a 48-42 final score meaning we are still unbeaten!
