This section of the website provides a general overview of all things Modern Languages at Wellington.

We aim to provide a broad, fascinating and genuinely inspiring look at the world of foreign languages. Pupils are expected to put their all into the study of each language, and are encouraged to study two languages at all times.

The benefit of having the ability to speak at least one foreign languages is phenomenal. Whole swathes of foreign cultures open themselves up, revealing experiences and moments of genuine amazement.

Study a language and immerse yourself in a world of wonderment.

Click here for a video that highlights some of the reasons why languages will be crucial in the future.

Other reasons to learn a language? Heard of globalisation and what it will mean? If not - the World Bank sums it up as

Globalisation is the increased capacity of individuals and firms to

1 Undertake economic transactions with residents of other countries

2 Operate on a global scale"

But why? Everyone speaks English don't they?

Over 80% of the world doesn't speak English - and only 6% or so speak it as their first language!!

Besides, think about what you can get out of learning at least one other language - these are genuine experiences of "languages learners":

"Conversing with Argentinians about the fortunes and misfortunes with Diego Maradona in Buenos Aires"

"Discussing the fall of the Berlin Wall with an East Berliner in the year 2000"

"Whilst trekking towards Mount Everest I fell into conversation with a Russian. Our only common language was French. It turned out he had visited my home town in England only two years ago"

"Playing football in Japan, we managed to play football with a group of Spaniards and French, but only because we could all speak Italian. Bizarre. But great."

Learn a language. Be inspired by the breadth of the world.
