Master in Charge of Boys and Girls Hockey: Mr Gareth Carr Email gdc@wellingtoncollege.org.uk
Wellington College hockey is going from strength to strength seeing us win no fewer than five out of the six Berkshire County Schools Tournaments held last year. Both the boys and the girls U14 sides were crowned Champions as well as boys and girls U16 sides. The 1st Xl girls made it through to the South Semi-Final where they narrowly missed out on a place at Nationals.
The girls play Hockey as their Major sport in the Michaelmas (Autumn) term whilst for the boys it is in the Lent (Spring) term. The College has two floodlit astroturfs which are of the highest standard. The girls now field15 teams for regular, competitive fixtures, the boys fielding 18 sides.
Participation is supported and encouraged and there are well suited, competitive fixtures for all ages and abilities, right the way from our strong Senior girls and boys 1st Xl's this year to those who play at a competitive, yet enjoyable junior or senior level.
Touring is also a regular feature of the sport, the boy's 1st XI toured Singapore and Malaysia in October 2006 and Barcelona in January 2011 to compete in the Los Reyes Tournament at RC Polo H.C.The girls Toured South africa in the Summer of 2009 and we are looking to take both the girls and the boys abroad in the near future.
We have a coaching staff that boasts three international players, Mark Pearn who is currently playing for Great Britain and England and has attended tournaments such as the Champions Trophy, World Cup, Commonwealth Games as well as the Olympics. We also have Gareth Carr a current South African International (S.A.H.A. Player of the Year 2009) who has competed in 2 Champions Challenges, the last World Cup in India as well as the Commomwealth Games also held in India in 2010. In 2010/2011 Adele Brown joined as our new Assistant Director of Sport and has also represented England and Great Britain.
To add to the above expertise we have a extremely motivated and enthusiastic group of coaches many of which have played hockey to a high level and have a wealth of hockey knowledge to share with the pupils.
