Welcome to the Fencing Blog!

20/10/09 - Guy Bishop (Cptn, LVIth, email questions to bishopgp@wellingtoncollege.org.uk)

Welcome to the Fencing Blog! I'm Guy Bishop, Fencing Captain of 2009 and campaigner to really put Fencing on the Map. I'm putting forward this big initiative to try to make Fencing more appealing to those of you who might have it pigeon-holed as a sport for people who have more money than time. Ignore anything you've heard about fencing before this point, unless, you know, it's someone telling you what a great sport it is. From this point on my team-mates and I will be giving point-of-view accounts of everything which happens to the team. Something like a diary, but we're going to fit in some explanations of stuff too so it'll be informational as well. Anyway, a bit about me: I've been at Wellington since 3rd Block and love it now as much as I did when I first came in. I spent two terms of my first year as a day boy and have boarded ever since. The Co-Education scheme was put into action in my first year and the girls have been coming in ever since, so I'm not quite sure why we only have one of the fairer sex in our team at the moment. Come one, come all, there's space for more! I've been fencing for six years on and off and am looking to complete a stage one coaching qualification this year.

Well, I personally think this has gotten off to a great start and I'm looking forward to our next time. Be sure to direct any queries you might have regarding fencing at Wellington to me.

Well, it's definitely been a while since I last wrote here. Anyone still following this, I respect your devotion and will shower you in gifts of glory... or would if I could find my team. That's right ladies and gents! They're all off doing work and so on. Anyway! I did have plans for people to be adding to this one a weekly or monthly basis but that plan seems to have failed. On the up side we're going to be finishing this term in a week or so and then it's on to the next one. Can I put forward to any new pupils who may have somehow stumbled onto this page - COME TO FENCING!

But yes, all things considered, this next year could be a make or break season. The club's popularity has sunk to the point that it may not be worth keeping it running another year. For that reason:

YOUR (FENCING) COUNTRY NEEDS YOU!

We plan on making some new activities tied with fencing which pupils could take part in. Things like 'Challenge-the-Teacher' Competitions and perhaps a stage fencing day, should anyone want to join in. If you're into the theatre then this might be just the thing for you! Our coach has had years of experience training actors to do what we do, so you should do it too! As an extra incentive I'm looking up prices for Team Shirts so that the fencing team can have SOMETHING that is ours, even if it only marks the final glory year. On the upside it means that the school won't have to suffer through so many of my emails shot through with TERRIBLE puns.

Anyway! In case I don't update again before the summer, this is Guy signing off.

13/09/10 - Guy Bishop (Cptn, UVIth)

Enter the players, my final year, and hopefully not the final year for the sport. Fencing has had a good start. With signings at the College Carnival branching onto the second side of A4, hopes have risen for the continuation of the team I've put a lot of time into. Training last week with last years team started... hesitantly, but I'm confidant that this year we might pull in a win... or two...

Either way, this year holds some promise. Once again we plan to pit our 'might' - or in the case of some of the others - 'flight' in the Kings College Wimbledon Team competition. Last year, this decision was well rewarded as a team of myself and Alex Galliano won bronze medals in the competition. Planning right now is going into the imminent Inter-house tournament which will hopefully see teams of three from each house battle it out for a nice little shield which will hopefully have some new names to add to those far too clean plaques. Watch this space, news is coming.

fence4.jpg

In other news, we add a new team to our rota this year. At some point in the next term or so, Wellington College will be fencing Cranleigh. I certainly hope that the result will be as good as I hope... Funny that. Anyway. Any students out there who want to be doing something active but can't get their head around Rugby or Lacrosse, come to fencing and see what we do. It's fun, it's exciting, it's physical and there's the possibility of having your name on a board. All we ask is that you pack your sense of humor and some small level of minor fitness (we can improve on that).

Well, I'm looking forward to it.

I am very conscious of leaving it too long without a word to the blog. So here's my attempt for today:

Thursday 23rd September - We received a draw against Eton at home. This match may not have been our best, and I know I was pulling my own hair out at some points, but with some serious fencing, not a small amount of luck and Leke Akerele's amazing left-handedness we managed to draw level with Eton in terms of victories. With an incredible performance by first timers Sai Lakhiani and Leke Akerele, we drew against Eton's finest.

Thursday 30th September - A match against Winchester College, again at home. This team I remembered from last year as being one of the hardest matches we had. This year, it was a cake walk. Without two of their best, who left last year, Winchester floundered against Wellingtonian might. With two wins for the A Team both foil and Epee, the B team only just lost out on giving Wellington a complete victory over Winchester. A shame, but still a victory. I look forward to meeting them again in the Spring when our team will only be stronger.

A good performance by both Sai and Leke, saving the B Team from Total Wipeout, but leaving Wellington with an overall draw with one of the harder schools we fence. NOT A BAD DAY OUT!

This week too will bring the first round of the Inter-house Fencing Competition. Already I have several team names down. Only several more to go. On Tuesday in the Studio at 3:50 will be -

Wellesley vs Raglan
4:45 -
Orange vs Murray

On Friday:

4:30 - Hardinge vs Apsley
5:10 - Talbot vs Picton

Please can team captains or housemasters email me their teams before the day.

06/10/10 - Guy Bishop (Cptn, UVIth)

Results for the Interhouse Fencing! The first round went along flawlessly, even giving the team time to train while we waited for the second participants. Unfortunately, the proceedings left us without two girl's houses, bad luck ladies! Without their strong team from last year, the Orange struggled to keep up with the impressive skills hosted by the Murray.  Meanwhile the Raglan struggled past strong resistance by the Wellesley with more than a few lucky points, and made it through to their next fight.

See you on Friday for the next installment

15/11/10 - Guy Bishop (Cptn, UVIth)

Good news - I'M NOT NEGLECTING THE BLOG! Last week was eventful for Fencing. On Tuesday we resolved the Blücher's by in the first round of fencing with the team fencing BOTH the Talbot and the Raglan in quick succession, with the result that the Blücher is going through to the Semi-Finals. Tomorrow (Tuesday) we're going to have three matches in the Dance Studio.

The Hoptoun vs The Hardinge
The Murray vs The Beresford
The Benson vs The Stanley

This means that we will have resolved the second round in a single week. Which is wonderful. The Semi-Finals should occur on Friday.

On Thursday we fenced Bradfield and sent them away with wins in the A team Epee, and both the B Team Epee and Foil. Our B team is rising to new heights. Aaron Jerome, 4th Former and the A team third man, wrote this about the match:

Match report: Bradfield vs.Wellington

Today we started the match with foil. The A’s lost this weapon with only 3 wins as opposed to Bradfields 6 victories. however the b team was much more successful winning all but one match. This was a great success for the team since foil the weaker weapon at wellington.
After this we moved onto epee. This weapon was much closer with the A’s winning by one victory and close score of 5 - 4 to wellington. The b’s once again were very successful with a 6 - 3 victory over their epee b team.

That's it for this week. Tune in next time.

Once again, it's time for a blog update.

Yesterday, (Sunday) Leke Akerele, Aaron Jerome and I went to the LPJS Team Epee Competition in Aldershot. It was a hard tournament with a series of difficult matches which we had to overcome in order to make podium position. As I was the only one with several years of solid experience, I helped to coach the others into seeing how their own weaknesses could be overcome and how to properly use the opportunities given. Leke proved himself very capable of putting these into action, scoring many complex hits against opponents and appearing to shrug off the fact that he started fencing this term. Aaron Jerome also made a point of putting advice into action and at the same time spotting his own openings, building on his own knowledge of the sport. It was an excellent competition, and if not for a few minor errors, the team would have made podium position. In fact, Wellington came fourth, barely missing out on the medals. Unlucky boys, but we'll beat them next time.

In addition, tomorrow the following houses will fence in the semi-finals.

Hardinge vs Murray

Stanley vs Blucher

Guy

End of season round-up, March 31st

House Fencing attracted serious entries from almost all the houses.  There is clearly great potential out there!  Many Wellingtonians seemed  almost instinctively to take to the épée.  And yes, the Blücher, home of our distinguished fencing captain, did win, but it was not that easy.

This was not a term of famous victories, but the senior épée team won quite a few bouts.  That said we need to work on the foil a bit more.  There were stalwart performances from veteran Will Johnson as well as solid performances from talented newcomer Leke Akerele.

There is new blood in the team, but next year's Captain, Aaron Jerome is keen to recruit more members, as are our two excellent coaches.

We did well at the Public Schools Championships.  Guy Bishop reached 43 / 118 in the Senior Foil and Leke Akerele got as far as the top 16 in the Senior Epée, which was very exciting.  Henry Martin, who has only just started was 61st in the Mount Haes Foil, and amazed himself.  I think we have come to realise that we could be very good and we look forward to the next season.

My special thanks go to Captain Guy Bishop for his commitment and patience.  He has always been there for me and the team and it has been a pleasure to see him develop as a fencer.  I must also say vale to Will Johnson and Leke Akerele who have been great additions to the club.  I must also thank all the parents for their support.
