Fencing

Fencing is available to the Third Form (Year 9) as part of the Wednesday Afternoon Activities Programme, and this is where we tend to pick up and develop new talent. Sometimes, of course, we are fortunate enough to have pupils who may have already fenced at Prep School. For the remaining year groups, Fencing can be done as a pupil's only sport, or alongside other sports, but the minimum commitment is one session per week, and availability for most matches, which are always on a Thursday afternoon.
For very keen fencers, there are local clubs, and it may be possible to arrange attendance at these in addition to the School's programme, which would allow competition in private tournaments.
We are fortunate in having the services of three professional coaches, who run sessions on Tuesdays and Fridays in the Sports Hall. We offer coaching in Foil, Sabre and Epee (all electric). Currently, fencing is available only in the Michaelmas and Lent terms.
Fencing is a mixed sport, and girls and boys compete on equal terms. Our fixtures are always enjoyable. We tend to fence against Winchester, Eton, Bradfield, RGS High Wycombe, RGS Guildford, Harrow, Charterhouse and Marlborough. We always compete in the three-day Public Schools' Fencing Tournament at Crystal Palace in March.
Wellington College Fencing Club is a member of the British Fencing Association, and we adhere closely to their rules and advice on best practice.
