Senior Writing and Reading Prizes

The following prizes are open to all pupils in the sixth form, and often throughout the school.

Gavin Ewart Poetry Prize (Senior)

    • 1st Prize: £70
    • 2nd Prize: £30
    • This prize is awarded for the best poem or collection of poems on a given theme for the year. One poem must be written in the form stipulated for the year. No poem may be more than 40 lines long. The competition is organized by Ant Peter.

John Maltby Prize for Prose Writing

    • Prize: £50 book voucher (presented at Speech Day)
    • This prize is for the best piece of original discursive or creative prose writing on any topic not specifically set for study in College. Pupils may submit only one entry, which may be of any length and in any form.

James Ramage Prize for Outstanding Literary Interest

    • Prize: £50 book voucher plus poetry by U.A. Fanthorpe (presented at Speech Day)
    • This prize is awarded for outstanding literary interest not specifically studied in the curriculum.

Junior Writing Prizes

The following prizes are open to all pupils in the 3rd, 4th and 5th Forms.

Gavin Ewart Prize for Poetry (Junior)

    • Prize: £50
    • This prize is awarded for the best poem, or collection of poems, on a given theme for the year. No poem may be more than 40 lines long.

J.M. Cruddas Prize for Creative Writing

    • Prize: £20 book voucher
    • This prize is awarded for the best piece of creative writing in any prose form and on any topic.

Academic Prizes

Verrall Senior Academic Prize

    • Prize: £50 book voucher (presented at Speech Day)
    • This prize is awarded on the basis of examination, coursework and classwork results in both the lower and upper sixth to the most outstandingly scholarly pupil in the sixth form studying English Literature.

Carr Prize for Sixth Form English

    • Prize: £50 book voucher (presented at Speech Day)
    • This prize is awarded on the basis of examination, coursework and classwork results to the most accomplished pupil in the sixth form studying English Literature.

Blakemore Prize for lower sixth English

    • Prize: £50 book voucher (presented at Speech Day)
    • This prize is awarded on the basis of examination, coursework and classwork results to the most accomplished pupil in the lower sixth form studying English Literature.

Willans Prize for 5th Form English

    • Prize: £20 book voucher (presented at Speech Day)
    • This prize is awarded on the basis of examination, coursework and classwork results to the most accomplished pupil in the 5th Form.

John Falconer Prize for 5th Form English and History

    • Prize: £20 book voucher (presented at Speech Day)
    • This prize is awarded by negotiation between the English and History Departments on the basis of examination, coursework and classwork results to the most accomplished pupil studying both English and History in the 5th Form.

Carr Prize for 4th Form English

    • Prize: £20 book voucher
    • This prize is awarded on the basis of examination, coursework and classwork results to the most accomplished pupil in the 4th Form.

3rd Form English Prize

    • Prize: £20 book voucher
    • This prize is awarded on the basis of examination and classwork results to the most accomplished pupil in the 3rd Form.

3rd Form Prize for Poetry Recitation

    • 1st Prize: Poetry Anthology and £10 book token
    • Runners Up: £10 book tokens
    • This prize is awarded to the pupil who performs the best recitation of a poem in the competition final during the 3rd Form.
