GCSE Drama

There have been some slight changes to the GCSE Drama syllabus content in order to make the course more comprehensive in its study of drama. The course now consists of 3 core modules which are studied over 2 years. They are as follows:

Unit 1: Drama Exploration. 30%

In this unit you will undertake a 6 lesson long practical assessment on a scheme of work chosen by your teacher in which your use of drama techniques and ability to create and devise scenes will be assessed. These sessions will be internally marked by your teacher, but videos of these sessions will be sent to an external examiner who will moderate these marks. You will also have to complete a coursework portfolio of 2000 words in support of the work done over the 6 lessons. This portfolio focuses on your ability to

  • Select material, communicate ideas and show understanding
  • Apply drama skills
  • Analyse and evaluate work

Unit 2: Exploring play texts: 30%

In this unit you will study one of a number of set texts given to us by the exam board, exploring your ideas for how the play might be interpreted. The text chosen for you for this year is Blood Brothers by Willy Russell.

This unit is examined in exactly the same way as unit 1, with 6 assessed lessons internally moderated and sent on video to an examiner. You will again have to write a similar piece of coursework; however this time it is only 1000 words in length. You will also be required to see a live performance of a play, not necessarily your set text, and then write a there review of 2000 words.

Unit 3: Performance project. 40%

This unit involves you creating a piece of drama of approximately 20 minutes in length inspired by a theme set by the examination board. You might decide to perform an entirely devised piece of work, or use sections of a script you might have found which inspires you. An external examiner will watch your performance and give you a final grade
