Wellington Dance Company
Wellington Dance Company is for dancers of an advanced level in the Fith and Sixth Form.
Students will work on developing their performance and creative skills in dance. The Company will also be involved in performances for the school and the community. The group will create repertoire in preparation for major dance events such as Speech Day and performances at the Royal Albert Hall.
Wellington Dance Company Training:
The principle of the Company training is to tailor a programme that reflects the range and breadth of skills needed for AS and A Level Dance. The training will also reflect the skills needed to go on to careers in the dance profession.
Technique
Core dance technique classes are in ballet and contemporary, which each include a variety of styles.
Creativity and choreography
It is increasingly important for dancers to be able to create their own movement and for them to be comfortable, accomplished and confident in doing so. Students receive sessions in creative dance and choreography, and will have the opportunity to work with professional choreographers to produce pieces for performance. Classes involve improvisation and contact improvisation, as well as learning how to create and manipulate movement material, leading to choreography skills.
Health Education
These sessions include basic information about the body in relation to dance and how to look after the body. Classes also consist of
floor barre work. Pilates mat work sessions are used throughout the course to give students core strength and control. Where
requested, students should practice exercises shown to them between sessions.
Performance
Students will have the opportunity to perform at events within Wellington College and within the Community. Dancers in the Companyy will perform in the Wellington Dance Shows, Speech Days, Round Square and will have the opportunity to perform at the Royal Albert Hall.
Enrichment activities
Wellington College endeavours to offer opportunities for students to work with professional dance artists/companies where possible. It is hoped that these experiences will be inspiring and enjoyable. Theatre trips will be accessible to enrich students experience in professional dance work and to enthuse them within their own creativity and performance.
Auditions
Auditions for the Company are held in September.
Uniform
What to wear for Company Classes:
Students need to wear tight fitting practice clothes to enable the teacher to see the student's body working during class. They also need to demonstrate that they are prepared and ready for each class and presented in a professional manner. All jewellery must be removed as wearing it presents a health and safety risk.
Hair must be tied up and away from the face, fastened close to the head for ballet.
