Cross-Country

Master i/c Cross-Country: Mr Chris Ewart cbe@wellingtoncollege.org.uk

Although the majority of cross country races are in the Lent Term there is the opportunity for all runners to participate in running throughout the year.  In the Michaelmas Term there are relaxed runs on Monday evenings for pupils and staff runners of all abilities and on Tuesday afternoons there are runs for the elite athletes.  At the end of the Michaelmas Term there are the Xmas Races for the whole of the 3rd and 4th Forms.

Throughout the Lent Term there are matches on Saturdays (and occasionally on Thursdays) which are generally multi-school events and can either be team races or team relays.  Wellington's home fixture is the Wellington Relays which attracts in excess of 20 schools bringing more than 60 teams comprising over 300 runners.  There are also intra-school races such as the House Relays and The Kingsley's Race where towards the end of the course all runners have to run through Swan Lake.  Visit the Kingsley's page for past results and photos. Lent Term training takes place on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.

In the Summer Term the Cross Country Club hold The Pink Pavilion Dash, the course being one lap of turf, starting and finishing at The Pink Pavilion.  The heats and finals are held towards the end of term and are run on consecutive nights starting at 9:05pm.  Summer Term training is effected through the Athletics Club where there are strong middle distance squads in all the boys and girls age groups.

In preparation for the Lent Term racing the XC Club anticipates going on tour in December to Banyoles, Spain for five days.  With the increasing ability and potential of the Wellington runners it is essential that the first girls and boys teams are in good shape for the Knole Run which is held in early January.
