Chess is currently a rapidly expanding sport at Wellington. The team competes in the Surrey and Hampshire Border Chess League and the Berkshire and District Chess League, both are adult leagues. Wellington are the current ECF National Schools champions. We also won the Junior 4 Nations Chess League and are unbeaten at school level in the UK this year. Our players won three sections at the UK Land Chess Southern giga final this year with three of them placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the U15 section. Next year we will be entering teams into both the Berks and Border League division 1, as well as team in other leagues. We can currently field three teams and pupils that turn up range from beginners to England level.
Chess Scholarships are available details from the registrar. Three awards were made in 2007, one in 2008 and one in 2009.
Chess Practices are every Tuesday and Thursday at 4.30 pm with Andrew Martin who is an International Chess Master and has also published several books /DVDs. He is also the manager of English Chess Federation Coaching. We have also added GM Nick Pert to the coaching team.
