THE MICROWAVE

A pastiche based on Hemingway’s vignettes from ‘In Our Time’

He stood watching the revolving plate with a fascinated expression. His hands were pressed against the glass, his mouth a twisted grimace. She begged and clawed at his clothes, but he was protected from her wickedness.

The hamster revolved slowly, dancing in the glass cabinet. It was beautiful. She started to hit him. He pawed her face, and she fell down. The hamster turned to face him and he saw the eyes. Magnificent! They were opaque, glass- like and bulging. The hamster no longer stood up, it had stopped dancing.

The light turned off. His show had finished.

He clutched at her knees and sobbed.

Apsley

ApsleyAB.jpgIn my room I sit alone,
A dark secret torrent destroys my "home",
In a place of pure comfort and memories past,
I see only ugliness that I dare not contrast.

In the streets I walk alone,
From almighty high horses I dream to dethrone
Those ally's who words cut sharper than a blade,
Yet I know before this, there's a price must be paid.

In my classroom I worry alone,
The words of my dispassion hit straight to the bone,
I believe I am all that you say I am,
Such hollow words hit like a battering ram.

In the night I dream alone,
Yet they won't be called dreams, for dreams I've outgrown.
Nightmares each of venomous words,
I dread to wake tomorrow to the bitter mocking birds
Whose tune so sweet ignores my sorrow,

I am alive today, yet why tomorrow?

Banter Code of Conduct

Banter occurs between friends who TRUST one another.

If you Banter with people who are not your friends you are being RUDE or even a BULLY.

Only Banter about things that you are SAFE GROUND for your friend.

NEVER PERSIST with one topic of Banter. This will quickly become tiresome, wearing and will erode their confidence.

Be EMOTIONALLY INTELLIGENT. By fine tuning your social antenna you should quickly recognise the signs that someone is not happy with what you are saying.

THEY DECIDE what is acceptable banter or not. You can not justify your banter by saying that you would not mind. We are all different and we must RESPECT one another’s differences...

SAY SORRY. We all make mistakes sometimes. If you have got your Banter wrong, say sorry and do not return to this line of banter again.

Banter can be fun, can build camaraderie and bonds groups of friends together but…

IT IS A FINE LINE BETWEEN BANTER AND BULLYING SO STICK TO THE BANTER CODE OF CONDUCT!

Orange

The lyrics to the Orange's anti-bullying song aptly titled "Words Can Hurt" are as follows:

Another day
Hear the voices in my head
Saying these things
Still hurts as much as it did the first time
Another day
Of hearing them call me these names
I only wish that someday

Someday I'll make them stop
Somehow I'll find a way
I'll make them realise words can hurt
And that what they're doing is not okay
Someone out there will know
Someone will understand
What to do and what to say
But that day is not today...

Living in fear
They're always right behind me
Turning my back
But their voice still breaks through
Wondering if I'll ever be okay again
I just want go home, I just want to be alone
I'll do fine on my own

Someday I'll make them stop
Somehow I'll find a way
I'll make them realise words can hurt
And that what they're doing is not okay
Someone out there will know
Someone will understand
What to do and what to say
But that day's still far away

Maybe,
What they're saying is entirely true
Then someone says,
"Someday

I'll save you"

"Someday you'll make them stop
Somehow you'll find a way
Just make them realise words can hurt
And that what they're doing is not okay
I'm like you and now I know
What to do and what to say
And I will make this all okay
And that day is today"

"You're not alone. They're not right, what they're saying isn't true. It's not the end.. It gets better. I promise you."

Someday I'll make them stop
Somehow I'll find a way
I'll make them realise words can hurt

And that what they're doing is not okay
If I reach out, there'll be someone reaching back
And I will know just what to do
And I'll know just how to act

Someday I'll make them stop
Somehow I'll find a way
I'll make them realise words can hurt
And that what they're doing is not okay
Someone out there will know
Someone will understand
What to do and what to say
And that day is today

"Let's make bullying stop. Today."
